The concept is, at its core, a story of controlled friction. Imagine electrons flowing through a wire like people rushing down a hallway. In a perfect conductor (an empty hallway), they pass through effortlessly. But in a resistor (a crowded, narrow hallway), they constantly bump into the atoms of the material. Each of these countless microscopic collisions generates a tiny burst of heat. This is Joule heating: the conversion of electrical energy into thermal energy through resistance.

In 1952, a chemist at Corning named S. Donald Stookey was experimenting with a photosensitive glass. He placed a sample in a furnace, intending to heat it to 600°C. Distracted, he accidentally set the furnace to 900°C. He expected to find a molten puddle. Instead, he pulled out a milky-white, opaque plate. When he dropped it by mistake, it didn’t shatter. It bounced.

He had accidentally created the first glass-ceramic. Through intense heat, he had forced the glass’s disordered atoms to rearrange themselves into a highly structured, crystalline form.
